People Power!

It was with great delight that I welcomed the news that Forth Ports PLC had decided not to go ahead with ship to ship oil transfers in the Firth of Forth.  I campaigned against this issue since constituents first brought it to my attention in 2005. I raised the matter in October 2005 with the Secretary of State for Transport seeking a statement on secondary legislation to regulate ship to ship oil transfers within UK territorial waters. I could not have for seen that it would take until 2008 to secure the only reasonable and acceptable outcome, no ship to ship oil transfers in the Firth of Forth.

I believe that this was when the real breakthrough came, demonstrating the mounting strength of feeling within the constituency against this proposal which was evidenced by the overwhelming response to my postcard campaign up and down the constituency. To everyone who phoned in or wrote, to those who returned the postcards and signed the petition, you can all share in this victory.
